While there she performed in performances on stage. The comedy musical The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was her Broadway debut. The Crucible revival came out in the year following. She was later in the action thriller film Spartan (2004) and received high praise for her performance in the drama TV film Gracie's Choice (2004).Her first major part was as the main character in the teen noir TV series Veronica Mars (2004-2007), getting praise from the critics and winning a Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television for her performance. In the 2014 film the series, she reprised her part as the title character and in the new season, she played the title character. Bell starred from 2007 to 2008 as Elle Bishop in Heroes, the superhero drama. Bell played the narrator of Heroes in the series for teens called Gossip Girl, reprising the role in the sequel to 2021. Bell also appeared as Jeannie van der Hooven, the female lead in the Showtime comedy series House of Lies. Bell was a part of Eleanor Shellstrop in the NBC comedy series The Good Place. This performance led to her being nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Bell also portrayed the role of Eleanor Shellstrop in the streaming series The Woman in the Home Across the Street From the Girl in the Window.
